When did Guantanamo Open?
The United States gained control of the Southern portion of Guantanamo bay, Cuba in 1903. It was used as a naval base, and in addition to that, Guantanamo bay detention camp was opened on January 11, 2002. On the first day alone, 20 prisoners were taken there.
What actions have been taken by each president since then?
The Bush administration opened the detention camp as a part of combating terrorism. In 2006, President Bush said that he wanted to close it, but never did. President Obama promised to shut down Guantanamo in 2008, and while he has transferred many prisoners out of the detention camp, he didn't fulfilled this goal.
